N-Acetyl-Carnosine and the Eye

Carnosine is generally found in high concentrations in the eye. However, in eyes suffering from cataracts or age-related macular degeneration, carnosine content is lower. Over time, eye proteins can get damaged, causing general eye-health degeneration as well as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. N-acetyl-carnosine eye-drops can help eliminate damaged proteins from the eyes.

Cataracts, Glare, Laser Surgery, Corneal Disorders

N-acetyl-carnosine eye-drops can improve vision in age-related cataracts in as few as six months. They have also been studied in helping to heal the eye and reduce halos after laser-eye surgery, in disorders of the cornea, and in reducing night-driving glare.

Maintain and Improve Vision

Carnosine eye-drops can also help improve visual acuity and clarity in those without a diagnosis, relax and brighten the eyes, and can prevent age-related vision degeneration.

The Promise of Carnosine

Carnosine is a simple compound with remarkable effects. Interest in Carnosine has recently increased due to the findings of cellular studies that showed that it can not only slow down, but can actually reverse the process of cellular aging. Carnosine is a strong antioxidant, and protects cells and proteins from damage. More than that, it has the ability to boost the cell’s capacity for clearing out damaged proteins by reacting with them to form complexes which are easier to remove.

While these effects are promising for a number of health concerns, one of the most exciting areas of application is eye health.

Eyes Syruped Shut

Protein damage is one of the greatest threats in eye health. As eyes age, misshapen proteins accumulate and interfere with vision, playing a major role in the universal age-related loss of eye structure and function. Protein damage in the eyes can eventually lead to specific degenerative diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Carnosine Research

Research has shown that Carnosine can alleviate cell damage when it is delivered directly to the eye, and has great potential for helping to deal with common degenerative diseases of the eyes.

  • In patients in late middle age who had varying degrees of visual impairment but no symptomatic cataracts, carnosine supplementation alleviated eye tiredness and improved vision. Users found that topical Carnosine “could brighten and relax their eyes.”
  • In clinical studies, Carnosine has been found to be effective in cases of primary and secondary corneal dystrophy, corneal erosions, trophic keratitis, and bullous keratopathy, as well as corneal ulcerations and other damage wrought on the cornea by viral and bacterial infections.
  • Many people suffer corneal haze after laser eye surgery. In patients with corneal haze following Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), topical Carnosine reduced corneal haze intensity, accompanied by an improvement in visual
  • Another study in patients who had just undergone PRK or LASIK (“LAser in-Situ Keratomileusis”) found that Carnosine eye drops sped up the re-growth of the corneal epithelium by nearly a day and a half compared to those who used a placebo solution. Users of topical Carnosine supplements following LASIK were also much less likely to suffer corneal
  • When applied to senior citizens with senile cataracts, Carnosine eye drops lead to improvements in eyesight and lens transparency in the great majority of patients.

N-acetyl-L-Carnosine- A More Effective Version

More recent trials have used N-acetyl-L-Carnosine, a metabolite of Carnosine which the body slowly converts back into free Carnosine. N-acetyl-L-Carnosine allows for slower, more thorough delivery of free Carnosine into the eye’s tissues and access to areas of the eye where Carnosine itself cannot penetrate.

  • In patients with cataracts, N-acetyl-L-carnosine eye drops improved visual acuity, with the strength of the effect ranging from a modest gain to a full 100% recovery. N-Acetyl-L-Carnosine topical supplementation also clearly improved glare sensitivity and lens clarity.

For All Eyes

Carnosine – and especially the unique biological “delivery system” provided by the Carnosine metabolite N-Acetyl-LCarnosine– can help the eyes to heal from damage, and allow the body to remove dysfunctional proteins from the eye. These compounds have clear potential to improve eye health in those who are losing it, and to support the maintenance of normal eye structure and function in people whose eyes are still healthy.
