Conditions Related to Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of tremendous musculoskeletal, physical and emotional change. Chiropractic care and massage therapy are especially needed during pregnancy because not only is a woman's center of gravity changing but her spinal structure becomes more flexible due to hormonal changes which relax ligaments. In an already unstable spine, that could aggravate spinal problems. These physical changes put increased pressure on the spine's discs and exiting nerves. Chiropractic and massage decrease back pain, and allow women to carry to term and deliver more comfortably.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic care can be helpful during all stages of pregnancy. Chiropractic adjustments help the spine to adjust to the increased pressure and keep the joints properly functioning. Research has shown that patients under chiropractic care experienced less back pain then the non-treated group, needed half the pain killers during delivery, and had on average 34% shorter delivery times than those without chiropractic care.
Massage Therapy
Massage therapy encourages musculoskeletal health and assists the body with the added postural stress of an altered centre of gravity. Massage addresses muscle spasms, treats breast pain by reducing congestion, and reduces constipation by incorporating an abdominal massage. After delivery massage helps restore proper biomechanics and muscle strength. Scarring resulting from a caesarian can be treated by reducing the underlying restricted tissue.
