About Acupuncture

acupuncture needles
For 2,500 years the Chinese people have treated health problems by having hair-thin needles inserted at particular points on their body.  Millions of people undergo this procedure, known as acupuncture, every year.  How successful are these treatments?  According to the National Institute of Health, acupuncture is effective for treating chemotherapy- and pregnancy-related nausea and for relieving postoperative dental pain.  It is also effective with other medical treatments, for menstrual cramps, headaches, asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower-back pain, general muscle pain (calf cramps, shin splints, hamstring strain, shoulder pulls, etc.), tennis elbow, Osteoarthritis, and other forms of arthritis.

How does it work?

Acupuncture is based on the theory that there are patterns of energy, called chi, flowing through the body.  Disease or pain results when this energy is disrupted, weakened, or becomes stagnant.  Your Doctor can correct the flow of energy by inserting needles a fraction of an inch into specific points on the body.

It is unclear how acupuncture works, though there is evidence that it stimulates the release of brain chemicals that regulate pain and mood.  One of the components which acupuncture helps is to produce endorphins, which are the body's natural pain-killers!

How does your doctor decide where to insert the needles?

Your doctor chooses the acupuncture points based on your health history.  There are specific points for each treatment which are based on meridians in your body and there are points that are specific to the condition you are being treated for.  There are 12 meridians which connect with the organs of the body.  For example, the Heart meridian which has a pathway traveling down the arm is joined to the Heart itself.

Does it hurt?

This varies from patient to patient. Some people feel a brief sting. Others feel a slight discomfort, which subsides after the needle is in. There may be slight bruising after the needle is removed.  Depending on your situation, six to ten sterile, disposable needles may be inserted for 15 to 30 minutes.  Your Doctor may pulsate a current through several needles if your condition warrants it.

How often do you have to go?

Some conditions can be successfully treated in one to four treatments.  Some others may take up to ten  treatments.  Patients suffering from chronic conditions may require regular treatments.  Ask your Doctor for an estimate of how many treatments it will take for your particular condition.
